Re: Creo Defaults / Performance Settings

Hello Brad, and welcome to the forum.

I have found the sheetmetal package to be a -huge- overhead on CPU cycles.  When I do a heavy sheetmetal session, I can literally smell my laptop's power supply being overworked.  So that is internal to the code.

As for lightening the load, dial down the graphics options.  You can see the relevant settings here in my post: Problem with animation graphics

Also change the model save option in config.pro to manage better file sizes of your saved parts and assemblies.  This will make the save process a bit quicker too.  I haven't found a downside to doing this yet.

config.pro > save_model_display wireframe

No help here on the bend table defaults but a custom user template file seems a likely way to do this.  Just be careful about custom files of all types inside the Creo loadpoint.  Upgrades to the software will delete these folders.  Best to specify libraries outside the loadpoint.

Display object path as text on a drawing

is there anyway to display the object path as text on a drawing.

This is so if anyone is looking at a print of the drawing that person could locate that on the network without starting up creo.

thanks

A more useable approach is to create a UDF for each character and place them one character at a time on the part.

This way the loop selection happens once for each character, when the UDF is created. Create datum planes in the UDF for the top, bottom, right, and left sides as references for the next character UDF.

A family table could be built for the UDF, but it isn't required.

Hello Marc,

I know this post is pretty old now but can you tell me how I can identify my homepath (i.e. Windows: %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%) as well as my startup folder within my installation of Pro/E WF4.0?  Also after a fresh installation would the "Home Folder" and the "Startup Folder" be the same location?

The reason I ask is the changes I am making to my config.pro don't seem to be taking effect and I am trying to troubleshoot.

Thanks,

Mike

You can change the text properties to be center jsutified.  Tha places the anchor in the middle of the text string.

HOMEDRIVE adn HOMEPATH are windows cariables.  Type "set" at a command prompt adn you'll see all the defeinted Windows variables.'

The startup directory is defined by the shortcut used to launch Proe.  Check the shortcut's properties to see what the "Start In" field is set to.

Features from CADDS IV I miss

$

1) Great line fonts - Orchard was a line of trees. Seems like one could force dashes to end at line ends.

2) The ability to make any 2d graphic into a fill pattern, not just crappy hatching

3) That fills were within boundaries and were not independently selectable. Move the boundary and the fill moved with it.

4) That the fill boundaries were auto-closed. If the boundary was interrupted the fill automatically bridged gaps.

5) That one could plot to a file and then import that plot file to create new geometry. Helpful for creating text stroked with a particular line font

6) The C-size tablet that allowed access to hundreds of commands with muscle memory to select the desired ones and simple printed overlays (no button-box holes)

7) The C-size tablet that allowed the entire screen to be used for the display of the model or the drawing instead of wasting space displaying icons

8) No Ribbon interface

9) Straight-forward command structure: Verb-noun: selections.

10) Because of the command structure, you didn't have selection competition. Ever try to move a symbol and get the view instead? Never happened in CADDS IV. Translate Entity was separate from Move View.

11) Well written documentation

12) Polyline (pwin) selection - not just a rectangular box. It's in Photoshop. Is it in Creo?

The only item that would be tricky nowadays is the tablet. Given that there are motion tracking wall sized white-boards, getting a B-size one set up is not unthinkable, but the mouse has driven the interface in ways that are incompatible. Maybe something like the Leap Motion could be used to create a similar interface.

Anyone have others they miss?

I'm guessing you are on WF5, so I've got no idea where I would look for these in menus there, but in Creo 2 it goes as:

Select the sketch feature --> Model tab --> Paste Special --> Adv reference configuration --> Pick references you need to change

or

Select the sketch feature --> Model tab --> Operations dropdown --> Copy in menu manager --> and then it's go figure by reading the command line.

Did I just call it a command line?

Problem with starting CREO

Hi,

During start of Creo pops up a message window:

License request failed for feature

Requesting CREOPMA_Student2 ...

C:\ProgramData\PTC\Licensing\BK390206EDSTUDENTUNICL_license.dat: (-10) Feature has expired.

I am using Creo Parametric 2.0, windows 7, I just updated Adobe Flash.

I had not been using Creo Student license for some time, I was not aware of any expiry of student licenses.

Thank you !

HELICAL SWEEPS- DON'T ALWAYS SEEM TO WORK.

A few questions on the Helical Sweep, I'm putting threads on an extruded circle (making a bolt).  I can get it to work, but only after lots of frustration.

1. When you create the Line Profile, do you have to draw the line exactly along the side of the bolt where the thread will be?   (I watched a bottle cap video tutorial on YouTube, which was very good by (Huu Huynh) but his Profile Line was about 10 units inside where he drew the triangle and it worked fine.)

2. Do you have to make your edit sketch along the Line Profile or can it be completely outside of it (related to question one)

3. When you draw the triangle (edit sketch for the threading), it seems like you have to place it a bit outside the bolt line for it to work.  Doesn't this ruin the accuracy of the pitch settings?

4. Finally, when you get the FAILED TO REGENERATE error,  is there anyway to find some clues about why it failed?

"  Unattached Helical Sweep detected???? ""

If anyone can shed some light, greatly appreciated.  I've attached a picture of the scenario I'm trying to describe.

Thanks.

You are working with a very small bolt.  It could be in the accuracy settings.  Try changing the pitch to a larger value and see if that lets it work.

In general, these work as expected but sometimes it gets lost.  Is the value of L1 the same as the pitch?  This can cause issues and can be resolved by stepping the triangle outside the bolt face and increasing L1 but manage the ID of the cut.  This will create an overlap in the spiral but will eliminate the tangency issues.

The trajectory is simply a guide.  The axis is a key element.  Just know how your sketch will interact with the trajectory.

When I define a bolt like this, I try to leave the appropriate flats.  Making the widths of the flat the same inside and outside is the challenge.  The theoretical sharp of the thread is always slightly larger than the specified screw size.  Below, the pitch is also .8:

Where's the challenge?

Sketch a construction line that is at the top crest and bottom crest location and another that is just below (oriented per your diagram) the bottom crest location. These construction lines will be constrained to points on the OD so that the geometry lines can extend beyond the body of the screw.

The distance from the last construction line and the upper one is the pitch. Set the distance between the last construction line and the bottom crest location to be the same as the minor diameter flat and they are automatically equal. This will replace the 0.8 dimension.

Cutting screw threads in models is an interesting exercise, but they are computationally expensive and provide little feedback for design purposes. For example, they don't well record the minimum and maximum threaded lengths, which a pair of datum curve circles can do. Threaded length range is useful to display that there is enough thread engagement.

I really wish PTC would make use of solid surface characteristics, such that one could apply a thread pitch and minor diameter and, when assembling, one could get feedback that the mating surface matched, and ignore interference between the major diameter solid surface of a screw and the minor diameter solid surface of the mating nut while not ignoring clearance problems with non-threaded surfaces. We're only 13.9% into the 21st Century and meaningful checks that don't produce a bazillion false positives are a lot to ask for. Yes, I know about cosmetic threads, and they don't offer this ability, and aren't particularly cosmetic, tending to show through solid features needlessly.

(the sketch already constrains equal flat areas with the two equal diameter reference circles.  I use the ID from the provided cosmetic thread to determine the offset)

Although it has always been PTC's stance that threads need not be modeled, they work really nice when grown using a quality 3D prototyping system when you don't have the particular tap on hand.  They also help in some instances where you want realistic images or diagrams where you want to distinguish between threaded holes and through holes.

A great improvement to the software would be to allow toggling between cosmetic and actual threads.  You can add to the votes if you can access Ideas here: Thread ideas: modeling and drawings

=Clever, but not obvious control.

The construction line method directly controls the crest and root flat widths.

The threaded holes have lead-in chamfers, so that's easy enough.

As I said, its an interesting diversion, but not of much use in design by which I mean engineering design, not product illustration images. If it is to look good, a helical spiral datum curve is faster to create and won't fail to regenerate. Maybe use a decal texture?

If it directly drives a manufacturing process, there's not much else to do, but the vast majority of helical threads are manufactured either by dedicated tooling such as taps and dies or roll-forming, or by canned manufacturing cycles that do not depend on a surface model. Solid modeled threads are costly to open, copy, regen, and display. Maybe it's not so noticeable for little assemblies, but build an assembly of a few hundred .5 inch .190-32 screws and see if there isn't a bit of a hit on performance.

Same goes for solid modeling of pierced and expanded metal, grating, woven wire screens, knurling, honeycomb, and other items or features that are not fabricated in detail based on the model. It's easy to add 1% or more to the CAD cost of a project for something that adds no value to the execution of the project.

Again - 13.9% into the 21st century and PTC still doesn't supply tools to determine the detailed performance affects of various modeling techniques in terms of CPU cycles spent, memory allocated, and triangle generation/memory for graphics display.

Hi,

open C:\ProgramData\PTC\Licensing\BK390206EDSTUDENTUNICL_license.dat in Notepad and check expiration date. Student license file contains a line similar to:

INCREMENT CREOPMA_Student2 ptc_d 33.0 23-may-2014uncounted \

Student license is valid 1-year starting from its installation.

I guess you have to uninstall Creo 2.0, remove license file and install it again.
